Waipa Racing Club, Te Awamutu
Founded in 1915, the Waipa Racing Club has enjoyed many years of successful racing. Its racing calendar includes the Cambridge/Te Awamutu Trotting Club races.
Pirongia Races
Every Boxing Day, New Zealand’s oldest racing club, the Alexandra Racing Club, hosts the Pirongia Boxing Day Races. Enjoy a flutter on the horses or just soak up the social atmosphere at this iconic Boxing Day tradition. This event is particularly unusual because every other day of the year, the racecourse is actually a golf course.
Walking
Waipa has many great walking trails, including the Lake Ngaroto wetland and the native bush-clad mountains of Mt Kakepuku, Mt Pirongia, and the renowned Mt Maungatautari sanctuary.
Spend a few hours bird watching, amble through ancient forests or opt for a multi-day hiking adventure with plenty of rewarding views. There are trails to suit every level of fitness.
